Essential Oils 101: The Everyday Oils

November 18, 2014·

I’m back for my third (and final) post in my Essential Oils 101 series! I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback from y’all saying that you’ve thought this series was really helpful and I really want to say that I totally appreciate your emails, Facebook interaction, messages and questions! I LOVE talking about this stuff, so keep them coming!

If you missed the first two posts in the series, you can check them out here:

And this is my post on my overall experience with essential oils (for more background, and whatnot).

Also, if you weren’t able to tune in to my live online Essential Oils 101 class last week, you can watch the recording of it here!

Anyway, today I’m talking all about the everyday oils – these are the most commonly used essential oils and they are also the ones that come in the Premium Starter Kit that I’ve talked about… Now, I know a few weeks ago I talked about some of these

I’m gonna give a little rundown of each oil, what it is, how it’s used, and all that good stuff.

Now, as always, I will put this disclaimer out there: I am NOT a medical professional, so I can’t diagnose, prescribe, treat, or cure any disease or ailment you might have. This is purely for informational purposes only! I totally encourage you to be your own health advocate!

Lavender Young Living Essential Oil oil is the “Swiss Army Knife” of oils. It’s one of the most versatile oils in the starter kit… it’s an “adaptogen” which means that it can assist the body when adapting to stress and other imbalances.

It’s great for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, but it also has balancing properties which means that it can boost stamina and energy.

It’s also GREAT for skin and beauty! It can sooth and cleanse cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. Oh, and put ONE DROP of this stuff in your mascara and it keeps your mascara from clumping! Plus, it smells awesome.

It supports normal sleep, ease occasional depressed moods, soothe sun-exposed skin, and reduce stress. It’s also one of the safest oils and so it can be applied undiluted to the skin.

It takes about 170-250 POUNDS of lavender plant material to make just one pound of lavender oils!

Primary Benefits:

  • Balances normal body functions*
  • Supports normal sleep*
  • Cleanses skin irritations*
  • Soothes and relaxes the mind and body*
  • Eases bodily tension and stress*

Lemon Young Living Essential Oil oil is cold pressed from the rind of the lemon, not from the pulpy acidic juice. This oil is full of antioxidants that have been linked to supporting healthy immune system function. Antioxidants create an unfriendly environment for all those “free radicals” and crazy things our bodies come into contact with each day.

It’s an important ingredient in natural cosmetics and it can be great for cleansing the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

It takes 43 lemon rinds to cold press ONE BOTTLE of lemon oil. Crazy!

Lemon oil will eat up petrochemicals in our body. If you ever drank from a plastic water bottle, you’ve been exposed. Use in glass, stainless steel, and ceramic only because it will eat through the petrochemicals in plastic or styrofoam. But don’t worry – this is what makes it such a great support for the cells in your body – it is scrubbing them clean!

I put a couple drops of this in my water daily… I love it!

Primary Benefits:

  • Supports digestive efficiency *
  • May improve concentration and mental acuity*
  • Helps with occasional gas
  • Helps of occasional heartburn
  • Helps occasional constipation

Peppermint Young Living Essential Oil peppermint oil is probably my personal favorite! I use it all the time!

Young Living Peppermint Oil is so potent and pure that ONE DROP delivers the effectiveness of 26 cups of pure peppermint tea. So yeah, a little goes a long way. It has a very earthy smell… it does NOT smell like peppermint candy.

It’s one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion and it can support and restore digestive functions.

Jean Valnet MD studied peppermint’s supportive effect on the liver and respiratory systems.

Other scientists have also researched peppermint’s role in improving taste and smell when inhaled. Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint’s ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness.

Interesting fact: You can mix a 15-ml bottle of peppermint essential oil into a 5-gallon can of paint to dispel the fumes.

Primary Benefits:

  • One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion*
  • Supports digestive efficiency *
  • May improve taste and smell when inhaled*
  • May improve concentration and mental acuity*
  • Helps alleviate minor aches associated with daily life
  • Helps with occasional gas
  • Helps with occasional heartburn

Who else would benefit from Peppermint Essential Oil?

  • Individuals seeking a natural way to soothe muscles*
  • Those looking to fill the air with a fresh, energizing aroma
  • Those looking for a lift in mental acuity and concentration*
  • Anyone seeking natural support for proper digestive function*

The cleansing effect of Purification helps cleanse and neutralize mildew, cigarette smoke, bad odors, cat urine, hotel rooms, paint odors, and odors in clothes and shoes. You can use it on bites from spiders, wasps, bees, mosquito’s, and ants.

  • Purification contains citronella essential oil, which is commonly used as an insect repellent.*
  • Adding a couple of drops of Purification to your washing machine helps keep your laundry fresh.
  • Lemongrass has a light, citrus scent that inspires and improves mental clarity.

Frankincense Young Living Essential Oil

When you hear of this oil, you probably think of what the Three Wise Men brought to Jesus when he was born. This is basically it… it’s a VERY valuable and sought after oil.

It was valued more than gold during ancient times and only people with great wealth possessed it. It’s mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records called the Ebers Papyrus (dating from the 16th century B.C.) with an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. The distillation process takes two weeks and a frankincense tree can’t be tapped into unless it’s 40 years old!

Young Living has a frankincense and myrrh tree farm in Oman!

It’s a holy anointing oil in many religions and has been used for THOUSANDS of years.

Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in skin care products for aging and dry skin. The ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks.

  • Why is Frankincense so helpful for emotions? Frankincense is high in sesquiterpenes. They act on the pineal gland, which is the gland considered the seat of emotions. Remember, research shows that when inhaling the pure constituents in these oils, can stimulate the olfactory receptors and activate regions in the brain’s limbic system associated with memory, emotion, and state of mind.
  • Frankincense has a visual tightening effect on the skin and may benefit older, more mature skin.
  • Slows signs of aging on the skin, such as liver spots
  • When used on a regular basis topically and internally, can aid in maintaining normal cellular regeneration.
  • Frankincense trees grow out of polished marble rocks, without soil.
  • Frankincense is as versatile as Lavender

Thieves Young Living Essential Oil

Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th century thieves in France who formulated an aromatic blend composed of cloves, rosemary, and other botanicals to use while robbing victims who died from the plague. Fun, right? Well, this blend is formulated with pure clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus essential oils. It smells SO. GOOD.

This proprietary essential oil blend was university tested for its cleansing abilities. It is highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health.*

It is a great oil to use as a safe, natural alternative to harsh chemicals and cleaners. There is a whole line of Thieves products including, oral care for mouth infections such as gingivitis, an antimicrobial hand wash, a household cleaner that you can use on literally everything such as, fruit and veggies, your dog, counters, windows, mirrors (and it does not smear) and toilets… all in one cleaner! You do not have to worry about chemicals of any kind! How many cleaners can do ALL of that?

Who Should Use Thieves Essential Oil Blend?
• Those who want to add an extra boost to their antioxidant support
• Anyone looking to naturally protect their surroundings
• Those looking to diffuse an aromatic oil blend that is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and biodegradable.
• Thieves products have been university tested and are highly effective.

Joy Young Living Essential Oil

I LOVE this blend. It is a blend of 10 Oils (Bergamot, Lemon, Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang, Mandarin, Rosewood, Geranium, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Rose). This blend brings joy to the heart, mind, and soul. It inspires romance and helps overcome deep-seated grief. It also smells ridiculously good. I love diffusing it with lemon!

  • Joy has Rose essential oil that has one of the highest frequency among all oils.
  • Joy also has Roman Chamomile in it, which provides relief of muscle discomfort.
  • Its gentleness makes it especially valuable for restless children.
  • I also love to use this oil during… “that time of the month”

Stress Away
Stress Away Young Living Essential Oil

This oil is another blend that I absolutely love. It is also now a permanent fixture in the everyday oils collection.

It’s a blend of Copaiba (Copaifera reticulata), Lime (Citrus aurantifolia), Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia), Ocotea (Ocotea quixos), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). It makes a great natural perfume!

And, it pretty much does exactly what it sounds like… it helps to support a boost your mood, reduce the feelings of stress, induce relaxation and reduce nervous tension. I love this oil blend so much! I put it on daily!

PanAway Young Living Essential Oil

PanAway is a blend of 4 Oils (Wintergreen, Clove, Helichrysum, Peppermint) and it basically does what it sounds like, can help relieve any type of aches and discomfort…

If you have localized soreness after gardening, shopping, working out, or any other physical activity, PanAway is your oil! This blend penetrates the skin and soothes soreness after strenuous activity. It integrates the soothing properties of helichrysum, wintergreen, clove, and peppermint, and can be used to relieve sore muscles and enhance overall well-being.

  • Wintergreen has historically been used to reduce various types of discomfort.
  • Clove stimulates and revitalizes immune function and is known for its antioxidant properties.

Citrus Fresh

Citrus Fresh

This oil has replaced Valor in the Premium Starter Kit and I actually just got it for the first time last week so I’m still learning the ins and outs of it. It is a blend of different citrus oils, Orange (Citrus aurantium), tangerine (Citrus nobilis), mandarin (Citrus reticulata), grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), lemon (Citrus limon), and spearmint (Mentha spicata). It smells GREAT in the diffuser and it’s GREAT in water!

Citrus Fresh is great for:

  • Supporting healthy sinuses
  • Hyperactive children
  • Minor anxiety / stress
  • In foods / water
  • Uplifts spirits
  • Relaxing
  • Occasional headaches

Melaleuca Alternifolia (aka: “tea tree oil”)

Melaleuca Alternifolia (aka: "tea tree oil")

This is also a new oil to the everyday oils within the Premium Starter Kit – it has replaced “Peace & Calming.” This is an extremely popular oil, and I will say that I actually don’t have this oil yet, but I just ordered it and can’t wait for it to get here!

In the meantime, a little about it… it is commonly referred to as “tea tree oil” and it supports the immune system and is highly beneficial for the skin.

It’s great for:

  • Minor aches and pains
  • Cleansing minor cuts and scrapes
  • Fungus
  • Supporting healthy skin
  • Supporting healthy gums and mouth
  • Insect bites
  • Sore throats
  • Cleansing surfaces

So there you have it…

Those are the 10 oils (plus the bonus 11th oil) that come in the everyday oils kit within the premium starter kit. I absolutely LOVE these oils (if you can’t tell by now) and they really have completely changed the way I approach taking care of my family, cleaning my home, and supporting our overall health and wellness.
