DIY Baby Diaper Cream with Essential Oils

September 22, 2015·

I can’t believe that I am JUST NOW sharing this recipe with you guys! This is actually one of the first recipes I ever set out to DIY. Even though I know Lilly’s days in diapers are numbered (here’s hoping!!), we still use this recipe to help keep her most sensitive skin healthy.

Since we have always used cloth diapers, we were limited in what we could use for diaper cream from the beginning. You can’t use any typical diaper creams with cloth diapers because the ingredients and chemicals build up on the cloth and make them no longer absorbent. Plus, I didn’t want all those nasty chemicals on my baby’s bum. 🙂 So, in the beginning (before we used oils and before I started making some of my own products), we had to use a very expensive organic diaper balm. We’d alternate between that and just plain coconut oil, but just plain coconut oil didn’t cut it sometimes.

Anyway, once I ventured into making my own diaper cream, I fell in LOVE. This recipe is the BOMB. Plus, it really does work on ALL skin – not just as a diaper cream! It’s great as a lotion or body butter.

It’s super easy and takes very little time to make! I hope you give it a try. 🙂

DIY Baby Diaper Cream with Essential Oils

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 cup of raw, unrefined shea butter (I get mine here)
  • 1.5 cup of organic coconut oil (I get mine here)
  • Vitamin E oil (I get mine here)
  • 10 drops of Lavender essential oil (I get all my essential oils here)
  • 7 drops of Frankincense essential oil
  • 10 drops of Gentle Baby essential oil blend

About Lavender Essential Oil:

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a sweet, floral aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Lavender’s aroma is great for relaxing and winding down before bedtime; add to bath or diffuse to create a calming and comforting environment. Lavender essential oil may compliment your favorite shampoos, lotions and skin care products. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. (source)

About Frankincense Essential Oil:

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) includes the naturally occurring constituent boswellic acid, and has a woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma. Diffuse Frankincense during prayer for grounding. Applying this oil topically may help smooth the appearance of healthy-looking skin, and is excellent to use for massage after activity. (source)

About Gentle Baby Essential Oil Blend:

Gentle Baby™ is a soft, fragrant combination of essential oils designed specifically for mothers and babies. It helps calm emotions during pregnancy and is useful for quieting troubled little ones. It is also soothing to tender skin. Many of the essential oils in this blend are used in elite cosmetics to enhance a youthful appearance. (source)

DIRECTIONS:

In a double boiler (or a makeshift double boiler) melt the coconut oil and shea butter together until they are fully mixed. Add in about 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil (I just eyeballed it… doesn’t have to be exact).

Let the mixture cool and come back to room temperature but NOT fully harden. I actually put my bowl in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Once it’s back at room temperature, add in the lavender, frankincense, and Gentle Baby essential oils. Then with a stand OR hand mixer, whip the coconut oil / shea butter / Vitamin E / essential oils until light and fluffy. This should take a few minutes. It will start to look like whipped cream!

Apply to your baby’s bum (or even arms, legs, belly, etc.) during diaper changes to help support healthy skin!

*BONUS* – This cream actually works GREAT as a super moisturizing lotion. You can use it anywhere you’d like healthy, soft skin! 🙂
