We love applesauce in this house. I love applesauce. Lilly loves applesauce. My husband loves applesauce.
There are a few things I do NOT love about most store bought applesauces though:
Since it is apple season (apples are APLENTY right now around here…), I wanted to set out to make some homemade apple sauce that is healthy and delicious.
And, this is what transpired and it is DELICIOUS. The only ingredients are apples, water, Cinnamon Bark and Lemon essential oils. No honey, no sugar, no lemon juice, etc. No added sugar whatsoever. Honestly, if you’re apples are ripe and in season, they don’t need all that added stuff to make the applesauce delicious! TRUST me! 🙂
Lilly BEGS for seconds, thirds, and even FOURTHS of this applesauce. This recipe is also great for supporting the immune system and keeping you healthy throughout the fall and winter months! Plus, the amount of applesauce you get for the price… WAY cheaper than the store bought stuff! So it’s basically a win / win / win!
I hope you give it a try!
About Cinnamon Bark essential oil
Cinnamon Bark essential oil promotes a healthy immune response, and helps maintain a healthy lifestyle regimen*. Cinnamon has been used traditionally for thousands of years as a spice, and provides a spicy and delicious addition when cooking or baking. This oil includes the naturally occurring constituent cinnamaldehyde, and is an important ingredient in many Young Living products including Thieves®, Abundance™, and Inner Defense™. (Source)
About Lemon essential oil

Peel and core all of your apples (this is honestly the hardest part of this recipe… haha!) and then cut the remaining apple pieces into cubes.
Place the cut apples in a crock pot or slow cooker and add in about 2-3 tablespoons of water and stir the apples all around so they’ve all been coated in the water. You don’t want so much water that the apples are soaking in the water or covered by the water… you just want enough to coat them.
Cook in the crockpot on low to medium for about 3-4 hours, or until the apples have begun to soften.
Once the apples are softened, mash them up with a potato masher or even a fork and spoon will do. I like to leave my applesauce the TINIEST bit “chunky,” so I don’t mash the applesauce the whole way. That’s just personal preference. Some people like a really smooth applesauce, so you’d keep mashing until all the apple chunks are gone.
Then, turn OFF the crock pot and add in your 1-2 drops of Cinnamon Bark essential oil and 1-2 drops of Lemon essential oil. You really should NOT need any more than this as the essential oils are concentrated and will flavor the applesauce nicely. The Cinnamon Bark even gives the applesauce a delicious little kick.
I HIGHLY recommend adding one drop, mixing it all together, and then tasting to see if you need a second drop. A little goes A LONG way. Seriously. Trust me on this!
Why not add ground cinnamon and / or lemon juice? Why add the cinnamon bark and lemon essential oils instead?
I hope that makes sense! 🙂
In any event, this recipe is EASY and delicious and good FOR YOU! So, I hope you give it a try and let me know what you think!
What do you think? Have you made your own applesauce before? Any recipes in particular that you love?
