For the girl who often feels like “too much” - I see you.

I struggled for years asking God why He gave me certain characteristics… my loud laugh, my big personality combined with a very introverted spirit... I was always put in situations where I was told I couldn’t or shouldn’t do something because I’m a girl, or that I should just keep my mouth shut instead of speaking up when it came to things that matter.

It’s taken me a few years, but now I know that those things are not an accident. God uniquely equips each of us for the things He calls us to. And sometimes He calls us to hard things. Sometimes He gives us gifts, so that we may steward them well to serve others.

And sometimes He blesses us genetically with a really loud laugh.

When I was a senior in college, I was student body president and I had the privilege of representing my university at a ceremony welcoming Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Jamestown and Williamsburg, Virginia. (These pictures are all I have of that day as we were not allowed to bring cameras with us.)

All of the student body presidents representing the public universities were briefed on Royal Protocol, what to say, what not to say, how to curtsey, when to extend or not extend a hand… It was a lot for a 20-min meeting.

She came in and greeted all of us one by one. I had this whole speech prepared and totally fumbled by the time she got to me. She asked me what I was studying and I told her, “English! With a concentration in Creative Writing! …your majesty!”

She replied, “Not the Queen’s English I assume.” It was a statement, not a question.

“No, your majesty.”

The Queen pried further, “And what do you plan to do with that degree in creative writing, Molly?”

“I want to perform sketch comedy! Or write for Saturday Night Live! And maybe write books someday.”

She looked at me curiously and said, “Well, I do enjoy a good bit of wit and humour and I do love to laugh. I imagine you’ll do very well with that, Molly.”

“Thank you, your majesty.”

And she went to the next person… At the time, I remember thinking, “This is a really cool experience.” But I had no idea how unique and special the experience would actually be.

I don’t pretend to be an expert in Royal dealings, but it can’t be denied that she lived an incredibly long life and leaves quite the legacy. May she Rest In Peace. God save the Queen. #ripqueenelizabeth #queenelizabethii #ripqueenelizabeth

I totally get it. Small businesses are trying to grow, authors are trying to sell books, entrepreneurs trying to entrepreneu. PR / marketing is so needed and so necessary. There’s a way to do it well and there’s a way to do it very poorly.

I get hundreds of guest pitches / press releases a week and 99% of them are… to put it lightly… really bad. Some of them comically so. Some are insanely long with way too much information (like a small novella’s length - no shade! I love all the words, too! But ain’t nobody got time to read all that!), some address me by saying, “Hello Still” (my name isn’t Still…), some address me as “Hello, Podcaster” or I’ve even received “Hello INSERT FIRST NAME.” I could go on.

I want to see people succeed so here are my tips if you are in PR / marketing or you’re pitching yourself / your business for something (this could also apply to job applications!):

-Know who you are pitching! Address the person by name! If you can’t find a name through the Google, address it to the business team!
-Keep it short and to the point. 1-2 paragraphs tops! Pique their interest and leave them wanting more.
-Make it relevant, unique, or make them laugh! Show you actually know why this would be a good fit.

That’s it! Now, go be great!
