How to Choose Stability in a Rootless Age | Business with Purpose Podcast EP 272: Daniel Grothe

My guest this week is Daniel Grothe, associate senior pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs. He is the author of Chasing Wisdom and The Power of Place: Choosing Stability in a Rootless Age.

He is a two-time Grammy-nominated musician. He and his wife Lisa live on a hobby farm with their three children. You may remember Daniel. He was on my podcast in 2020, episode 205, and he is one of my favorite interviews of all time. He’s hilarious, kind and wise.

4:40 – Farm updates

  • The resident elk herd is moving through right now. They just harvested their 20th cow and sent out another 2,000 pounds of beef.
  • Life is full on Quiet Waters Ranch.

13:45 – The Power of Place: Choosing Stability in a Rootless Age

  • We live in a divorce culture. It’s easy to be done and leave. We live in a place of impermanence, where everything is replaceable.
  • Many people run from little annoyances and idiosyncrasies. But if we submit to where we are, God can make something of us.

22:37 – An age of wanderlust

  • We live in a society of great cultural and social dislocation. We are living in an age of wanderlust.
  • We have the deepest pockets of any society in history and maybe the loosest roots.

27:42 – Place, worship and people

  • National Geographic did a study called the blue zones, pockets of centenarians who lived over 100 years old. They ate a lot of fish, walked a lot, stayed in the same place most of their lives, had a place of worship and had long-term friendships.
  • Place, worship and people matter to longevity.

35:32 – The art of place making

  • If you’re not in a threatening environment and are having just run of the mill problems, practice the power of place. People are the great purifiers.
  • Make where you live wonderful, beautiful, life giving and rich.
  • The art of place making – have you created a little nest, a little area where you can be human?

38:46 – Come home to family

  • Do your work, go get your money and come on home to your people where you’re safe.
  • Life is complex and people are going to frustrate us at work, but come home and feel peace.
  • There is a depth of riches to be found in friendship.

43:21 – Sacred canopy of church

  • Church can be a sacred canopy to provide joy, safety and protection.
  • Submit to your local church

44:25 – Community

  • What are you doing to make your community better?

52:07 – Stay in place

  • You have all that you need right where you are.

55:33 – Get to know you

  • Best concert he’s ever been to? Boyz II Men
  • What actor should play him? Jim Carrey

FEATURED QUOTES

The art of place making – have you created a little nest, a little area where you can be human?

If we submit to where we are, God can make something of us.

We live in a society of great cultural and social dislocation. We are living in an age of wanderlust.

There is a depth of riches to be found in friendship.

Apparently March is “National Sleep Month.” Which feels like a joke when you have a newborn. 😅

Sleep is currently happening in very small, unpredictable increments over here… but when I do get a chance to sleep, this mattress is where. it. is. at. 😍

Mattress Concierge (@mattressconciergehome) builds handcrafted luxury mattresses in Hartford, Connecticut that are used in boutique hotels, and they deliver them directly to your home.

They’ll even take your old mattress away! (This is KEY because ain’t nobody got time to go figure out how to get rid of the old one…)

So yes… I may not be getting much sleep right now, but at least the sleep I get is really good. 😴

When I was writing this sermon, I asked God very specifically, “If people take away nothing else from this message, what do you want them to hear?” And I felt Him say so clearly, “Tell them, I won’t waste any of it.”

So many people are walking through really, really difficult things right now. Have walked through really difficult things. Are going to walk through really difficult things.

And the thing is, God wastes none of it.

And I know it’s easier said than done… When you’re in the middle of it and it makes no sense. It feels like nothing good can come from this really hard thing. But I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it, I’ve felt it, I’ve witnessed it… God wastes absolutely nothing.

And it’s hard because sometimes we don’t get to see the fruit when we want to… But one thing I know for sure…He is faithful. He is good. He never, ever fails.

I also looked like this when I thought I was gonna do a song and dance audition at the Apollo. Bless my heart.

2025: I turned 40, grew and birthed a miracle baby, went on a Disney Cruise, travelled to Banff, watched my kids soar, my marriage thrive, made sweet memories with friends, read 756,000 pages for Seminary, wrestled with and trusted God more than ever before. It wasn’t an easy year, but it was a beautifully wonderfully hard year I wouldn’t trade for anything. Here’s to 2026. 🥂 #2025recap

Some seasons stretch you in ways you wouldn’t choose, but end up shaping you anyway. Today, I finished my fourth semester of seminary (I`m officially halfway through!) in the middle of a beautiful and hard season... it reminded me that growth doesn’t come from having it all figured out. It comes from showing up, staying connected, and trusting that what’s forming quietly now will matter later.

Grateful for the lessons I didn’t plan on learning. 🤍

⭐️ ONE MONTH ⭐️

How is she one month already? Also, why was my pregnancy 753 years long, but she was born five seconds ago. This girl has been the greatest blessing and surprise of our lives and we are obsessed with her.

Her quilt handmade by my dear friend @beakersandbobbins is perfect for this btw. 😭🥹😍 #galileejoy
