This is a real moment of honesty… prior to last week, I hadn’t been to the dentist in almost 9 years. NINE. That’s not a typo. I had not been to the dentist in nearly a decade. Please don’t judge me, we are friends, okay? Friends don’t judge friends.
I have had HORRIFIC dental experiences in my life and I have probably a legitimate case of dental PTSD from them. So, admittedly, I have been absolutely terrified to go to the dentist. However, I realize that I am now “Well into my 30s” and I have two young children and I knew that it was time for me to get OVER that fear and actually GO TO THE DENTIST. I also do not want to pass down that fear to my children… I am very cognizant of that.
“GOING TO THE DENTIST” has been on my “list of goals” for like, three years… and I said, “2019! THIS IS THE YEAR! I WILL GO TO THE DENTIST!” and then I got an email….
When Dr. Sarah Barker of Cardinal Family Dentistry in Apex, North Carolina reached out to me, I knew it was a sign. “Okay, God. I’m going to get over this fear.” Through a series of small world connections, I knew that this would be a good fit. SO, I made the appointment for me and my kids to go to Dr. Barker’s office for a cleaning.
I am not going to lie to you, friend. I was so anxious. The whole week leading up to it, the morning of, and even pulling into the parking lot… I was anxious. I even told Dr. Barker that I was anxious. But from the moment I spoke with her on the phone to the moment I met her in the office, she was very reassuring but I was still nervous.
Once we arrived we were greeted by Judy who is probably the nicest person ever. She immediately welcomed my young children who also were nervous… she brought out a box of toys and greeted them and they immediately felt comfortable. Dr. Barker came out and greeted us and gave us a “tour” of the facility which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Seriously. It’s the nicest looking dental office I’ve ever seen! It doesn’t have that dentist office aura at all. It’s almost homey!
We got into the chair and Dr. Barker walked me through every step of the procedure and cleaning. She explained everything in detail, made sure I was comfortable, answered any question or addressed any concerns I had. There is a TV right there in the seat so you can watch whatever you want. When it was my turn, I watched some Fixer Upper… because Chip and Jo make me happy. But since my children were with me, we then turned on a Disney movie and they were as happy as could be.
I was never uncomfortable, felt totally safe, and she really eased my anxiety over every step of the procedure. For me, I was totally won over. In the end, I only had one small cavity and Dr. Barker said my teeth look awesome! (Hey, for not being in 9 years, that’s not bad! #thankyouThievestoothpasteandmouthwash #itpaystofloss)
My kids also had an amazing experience! Dr. Barker was SO great with them, really playful, and made their dental experience FUN. We declined a fluoride treatment and x-rays for my kids and she was totally supportive and understanding of that personal decision. Both of my kids got glowing reports on their beautiful teeth!!
Oh, and THEN, my kids got to pick a prize from the most incredible prize box in North Carolina… SO MANY CHOICES.
Now, since I was getting my teeth cleaned AND since both kids were, too… we were there in her office a hair over two hours and yet it was SUCH a pleasant experience. My kids loved it! I can’t even believe I’m going to say this… but I loved it too.
We already scheduled our next cleaning appointment for in six months!
Honestly, I cannot recommend Dr. Sarah Barker enough!

I want to thank Dr. Barker for reaching out to me and for helping me work through my VERY legitimate fear. I actually can’t wait to go back in 6 months. I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM SAYING THAT.
