Being Still | Giving Thanks Where Thanks is Due
“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” -Colossians 3:17
How often do we find ourselves constantly ASKING for stuff when we pray? How often do we find ourselves saying, “If I only had this…” or “If only this could happen, I could…” or “I really wish that…”? I know I find myself saying all of the above all the time.
Whether I’m just thinking it or I’m praying and I suddenly realize all I’m doing is asking God for X, Y, and Z… I have been finding myself recently in “want” and “need.” I need this. I want this. If only I had that.
That’s a bad place to be.
When we constantly find ourselves in want or in need, we begin to become ungrateful for what we already have.
This is something that doesn’t come easy for me… I don’t think it comes easy for any of us, really. We’re human and it’s our nature.
So, it’s something I have to remind myself of every day. I have to be diligent in remembering all the blessings that I already have – all that God has already done for me. I mean, outside of ALL that I have in my life to be thankful for, He gave His son… for ME. For you. For all of us. What a precious and amazing gift that is.
It’s really just a matter of whenever I come across something I’m thankful for, I just thank God for it in that moment.
Whether it’s air conditioning on a hot day, delicious food when I’m hungry, or my amazing husband and daughter. There’s SO much to be thankful for. There’s SO much to praise God for. There’s SO much that He has done for me… and instead of sitting around wishing and thinking about all the things I want or I need, I need to remember all that I already have.
If that makes sense… 🙂
What about you? What are you thankful for today?
I was just having this conversation with God yesterday. I said, God, I will not ask you for X, because that’s silly, but can you help me accept Y without X? Anyway, this is great timing. I’m thankful for my health, my husband, my job… the list goes on and on. I’m very blessed.
thankful for the little goober sitting next to me asking me to make it cold in the living room so his bowl of corn will get cold.
I’m thankful for my wonderful family :).
